My initial source of inspiration is sparked by people, animals and flowers. My focus is to capture their essence with colour, light and expressive mark-making to produce fresh and vibrant work. A recent focus has been producing paintings using a combination of colour and bold mark-making to open up the surface. Then to carve out the subject, using oil paint, from the random background shapes to suggest the essential character of the subject. Often the painting will evolve beyond the original subject, by responding to the qualities of the paint and surface, it develops a life of its own.
I also like to paint from life whenever possible and have a strong grounding in portrait and figure drawing. The journey of my paintings also involves digital processes to explore possibilities and unexpected directions.
