My initial source of inspiration is sparked by people, animals and flowers. My focus is to capture their essence with colour, light and expressive mark-making to produce fresh and vibrant work. Often the painting will evolve beyond the original subject, by responding to the qualities of the paint and surface, it develops a life of its own.
I like to paint from life whenever possible and have a strong grounding in portrait and figure drawing. The journey of my paintings also involves digital processes to explore possibilities and unexpected directions. A recent focus has been producing portraits using rapid brushstrokes and thick glossy oil paint to suggest the essential character of the individual.
